Porsche BCM Key Programming: Add Key or All Keys Lost

Porsche key programming is one of the more specialized services in the automotive locksmith world. Unlike many vehicles where key programming can be done with widely available tools, Porsche's security system requires specific equipment and expertise — which is why dealer quotes for key work often run $800 or more.

Mail-in BCM programming offers a flat-rate alternative for most Porsche models up to 2019/2020. Here's what you need to know.

The BCM (Body Control Module) is the central electronic module that manages most of the vehicle's body functions — including the immobilizer system that controls key authorization.

On Porsche vehicles, the BCM stores the list of authorized keys. To add a new key or to program a key when all keys are lost, the BCM needs to be accessed and reprogrammed. This is why Porsche key work can't be done with a standard key programmer — you need equipment that can communicate with the BCM's security protocols.

If you still have at least one working key but want a spare, this is the simpler of the two scenarios. We can program an additional key to your BCM so you have a backup.

This is a smart move if:

• You bought the car with only one key
• You want a spare in case a key is lost or damaged
• You're selling the car and want to provide two keys

If you've lost every key to your Porsche, the BCM needs to be reset and new keys programmed from scratch. This is a more involved process but the result is the same — a working key programmed to your vehicle.

For AKL, we reset the key authorization data in the BCM and program a new key. You'll need to have the physical key blade cut separately (a dealer or locksmith can do this by VIN).

For both add key and AKL scenarios, we need your BCM unit.

The BCM location varies by model:

• Cayenne: Typically located under the dashboard on the driver's side
• Panamera: Under the center console or dashboard
• Macan: Under the dashboard, driver's side
• 911 (991/992): Behind the dashboard

Removal is generally accessible with basic hand tools, though some models require removing trim panels. Model-specific removal guides are available on YouTube for most Porsche models.

• Panamera: 2010–2020 (970, 971)
• Macan: 2014–2020

1. We connect to the module using specialized Porsche programming equipment
2. For add key: we read the existing key data and authorize an additional key
3. For AKL: we reset the immobilizer and program a new key from scratch
4. We verify the programming is correct before shipping back

The process takes a few hours. We ship the same day we receive your BCM.

Flat rate: $450 for both add key and AKL scenarios, for most models up to 2019/2020.

Return shipping via USPS Priority Mail Express is included. You'll have your BCM back in 1–2 days after we ship it.

Total round-trip time from when you ship to when you have your BCM back is typically 3–9 days depending on your location.

Porsche dealer pricing for key programming varies, but expect:

• Add key: $400–$700 at a dealer
• AKL: $800–$1,500+ at a dealer

Mail-in programming at $450 flat covers both scenarios and includes return shipping. For AKL especially, the savings are significant.

A few things to confirm before removing and shipping your BCM:

1. Verify your model year is compatible — reach out if you're unsure
2. Note your VIN — we may need it for certain programming scenarios
3. For AKL: arrange to have the key blade cut after you receive the programmed BCM back (dealer or locksmith can do this by VIN)
